Reminds me of when I got a book autographed by the great Calvin Trillin. When I told him to spell my first name like Merle Oberon, he took a beat, then looked up at me and said, "I don't think you're going to be able to use that much longer."
I found this article when googling "Sammy Glick" after reading your JD Vance article. Thanks for the explanation. I remember coming across references to "What makes Sammy run," but never read it or knew what it was about. I liked "Hillbilly Elegy," but found Vance rather unaware/unappreciative of the sacrifices others (like his sister) made to get him where he is. Too many working class heroes and other achievers act like they did it all themselves.
Love this article, Tim! BTW, I am also on substack - rickgeissal.

Tim, I love that you are bringing Sammy back. I actually loved the novel, despite the detail. btw, how do I pay for my sub?
You don’t, it’s free!
