Everybody thinks they pay too much in taxes, but everybody is wrong; we pay too little. I’m not talking about Mitt Romney’s famous 47 percent (now closer to 40 percent) who pay no taxes at all, usually because their incomes are too low. And anyway, even low-income people pay regressive payroll taxes. I’m talking about people from the middle class on up, which probably includes you, dear reader. Given TNR's demographics, that's probably true but, as a general proposition, there's no reason not to say, "Their taxes are too low." The payment obligation should, more or less, conform to income distribution and, as I understand it, a microscopically small segment of the population receives the lion's share of the income.
