The Mystery of Republican Governance
How do Republicans get away with defying majority opinion, even in deeply red states?
William Gillette as Sherlock Holmes.
The greatest mystery of American politics is why the Republican Party (and possibly the entire country) can’t rid itself of the dangerous and by now extremely tiresome sociopath Donald Trump. But the second greatest mystery is how Republican officeholders get away with defying voter sentiment on a regular basis without suffering at the ballot box.
I can’t answer the first of these questions. But the second, arguably related, question is addressed in my latest New Republic piece, drawing on a recent Bloomberg Opinion piece whose inescapably partisan import seems either to have eluded its editors and/or authors or to have worried them so much on the eve of a major election that they obscured it. The article’s meaning does not elude Backbencher. Watson, the game is afoot! You can read my piece here.
Great piece. And yes, the Bloomberg Opinion piece was hilariously "both sides" in its bizarre analysis of the facts they presented. But I must take issue with your closing line: "The GOP can’t keep our politics rigged forever." Umm, not so sure about that.
