I'm Not Going To Miss the Iowa Caucuses
Iowa is too small and too white to kick off the primary calendar, and the caucuses themselves make the Electoral College look uncomplicated. Plus, can't something be done about Iowa food?
In my latest New Republic piece, I bid good riddance to the Iowa caucuses, which just lost their privileged place in the Democratic primary calendar. What the hell took so long? A subplot here the nastiness of broasted chicken (above), a signature Iowa dish that I’ve been inveighing against for 23 years. It’s really hard to screw up chicken, but Iowa manages.
A correction on the article:
The other three states less diverse than Iowa are Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, all locales where people who say “flyover” are at risk of owning vacation homes.
I think realistically, the people most likely to say "flyover" are faux-populist politicians in non-coastal states (like Joni Ernst), attributing imagined disdain to fictional residents of coastal states, to whip up resentment among their voters.
