Donald Trump Is Emptying My IRA
This doesn't end well.

I lost $800 while writing my latest New Republic article about the fallout from Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs. My IRA was down about $12,000 when I started writing late Thursday morning and it was down closer to $12,500 when I finished early Thursday afternoon. By the time my editor was done fiddling with it was down nearly $13,000. I wrote the piece faster than usual so we could have something up on Liberation Day Plus One. Please make this stop. One thing about the tariffs issue that I don’t understand. Why don’t all the countries affected simply call Trump’s bluff and offer to eliminate all tariffs on US exports if the US does likewise? What’s wrong with totally free trade between our countries? Most all of them have a huge competitive advantage in their lower wages so why do they need protection from high wage US workers?
