I can understand why political analysts, looking back on this or that election, will say, “Voters didn’t care about why things were a certain way, they just wanted to blame the people in charge.” Sometimes that’s the only explanation. But I can’t fathom why political analysts, looking forward to this or that election, will say, “Voters aren’t going to care why things were a certain way, they’ll just want to blame the people in charge.” Voters are sometimes stupid, but they aren’t fated to be stupid. When the analyst in question is a political reporter whose job it is to explain to the masses why things are a certain way, but chooses not to, I find such cynicism seriously annoying.
The analyst who’s annoying me today is Chris Cillizza. To find out why, read my latest New Republic piece.
